Black Hills Energy Chooses Pandell Software

May 1 2020 | Corporate

May 1, 2020 – Houston, TX – Today Pandell announces BLACK HILLS ENERGY, a gas and electric utility provider serving 1.2 million customers across eight U.S. states, has signed on with Pandell as its integrated land and GIS technology vendor and its land record conversion service contractor. Black Hills will implement Pandell’s Land & GIS Software Suite this fall, and as part of the implementation project, Pandell’s Land Records and GIS Mapping Services division will digitize and map 2,000 of the company’s paper agreements.

Black Hills Energy’s new cloud-hosted SaaS solution will integrate with its existing Esri GIS, Peoplesoft Financial Management, and FileNet Document Management systems, to serve as a single access point for all land rights information. This will allow users in Corporate Development, Land, and GIS to move seamlessly between land records and spatial data in the GIS, ultimately giving them a mapped view of their land assets. The company will access its acquisition projects, land records tabular data, mapped land rights, scanned documents, and accounting data, all from Pandell’s application suite.

Previously the company used spreadsheets with meta data from their FileNet DMS to manage their land agreements, however, locating records and identifying which agreements had payments due was a constant challenge. Pandell’s land system will make it easier for land and project teams to search and report on their operations. Automated tracking and email notifications will help the company meet payment deadlines and other contractual obligations.

“One reason we selected Pandell was because of the company’s long-time experience building and implementing software for some of North America’s largest utilities,” said Randy Harris, Director of Corporate Development at Black Hills Energy. “We know we’ll gain tremendous efficiency by having all our land records and GIS data digitally tracked, linked together, and viewable by project or area. Pandell can make that happen for us.”

Why SaaS Matters for Energy and Land Management

For energy and land teams, SaaS is less about chasing new technology and more about enabling better ways of working. Cloud-based platforms support collaboration across teams, provide secure access to data from anywhere, and reduce the operational overhead of maintaining on-premises applications.

At Pandell, these principles guide how modern land and project tools are built and supported, helping organizations stay current as regulations, data volumes, and workflows continue to evolve.
